Dreamhaven's new turn-based RPG Sunderfolk is here and wants to capture the fun of a DnD game night.
Baldur's Gate 3 is in a league of its own when it comes to official Dungeons and Dragons video games. Even without the DnD connection. it’s still one of the best co-op games ever. The games large size and endless possibilities make it loved by many but it can also be overwhelming for some. Sunderfolk aiming for a relaxed co-op experience like a fun DnD night and using smartphones in a unique way is one of this years most exciting new projects. The wait to play it is finally over.
To clear up any confusion: no this is not a mobile game. Sunderfolk developed by Secret Door a team under ex-Blizzard boss Mike Morhaime’s Dreamhaven is a turn-based RPG for PC and consoles. The phone acts as your controller inventory and hand of cards replacing the need for multiple gamepads or mouse and keyboard. It is like your DnD rulebook. Just start the game on your system connect it to a shared TV or monitor have everyone download the free app and scan the QR code on the screen. Everyone will be connected to the same game. You only need one copy of the game no need for everyone to buy it.
While party game fans might have seen something like this in Jackbox adding it to a complex co-op RPG is something new and fresh not just a gimmick.
So what happens in Sunderfolk? It is about rebuilding and protecting the small village of Arden located under a magical Brightstone that gives life. However the Brightstone is corrupted causing trouble for the people of Arden.
You can choose from six classes each based on a traditional RPG role: Arcanist Bard, Berserker, Pyromancer, Ranger or Rogue. Each class is represented by an animal: raven, bat, polar bear, mini-dragon, ram, and a shinobi-style otter. As a team you will complete missions with turn-based battles. When it is your turn you choose an action and a card. The card can make your action stronger add a helpful bonus, or sometimes if you are unlucky make your attack weaker or give you a disadvantage.
After completing a mission and keeping Arden safe you return to the village where you can talk to the locals get upgrades and help rebuild the place.
While There are some great turn-based RPGs out there and more are coming soon. but none focus on couch co-op and innovation like Sunderfolk. Now you and your friends can dive in and enjoy it together.
Sunderfolk is now available on Steam for PC and also on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch.
