Jagex has confirmed that Dragonwilds mods are coming to RuneScape as the Gielinor-based survival game climbs to the top of the Steam charts after its launch.
When you think of Runescape you probably picture things like simple pixel graphics wise old men lots of woodcutting and big rats. But you also think of the strong community a game made by developers based on player feedback. After attending RuneFest it’s clear that the passion Jagex has for the game matches that of its players making the MMORPG feel like a shared exchange of ideas. Rich Mod Rook Turek the creative director of Runescape Dragonwilds says the team wants to bring the same community spirit and freedom to their new survival spin-off and he believes mods will play an important role in achieving this.
Mods show how much freedom players have and how much trust developers give. It is like giving your brand-new car to a fun unpredictable group who might mess things up. But when I talked to Jagex about Old School RuneScape’s Project Zanaris they said that even if the game gets a little ruined that can be part of the fun because the game is made with love not meant to be kept locked away.
Turek wants the new Runescape spinoff Dragonwilds to feel both cozy and a bit chaotic. He knows the community will really want mods and private servers. The good news is he says mods are definitely on the table for the future.
When I ask if Dragonwilds will be a closed off game like other big titles Turek shakes his head. No we want the community to be involved as much as possible he says. The first step is letting players run their own servers. These servers will have some settings you can change though we’re still deciding what those will be.
Modding is definitely something we are thinking about. We talk about it a lot. Right now we're focused on improving the main part of the game and making sure there's enough fun content for players. After that we'll look at what tools we can give players so they can be creative and make their own experiences. This idea is really important to us and it's also how Jagex likes to work by giving players more control and involving the community.
Mod support and private servers aren’t planned for Runescape Dragonwilds yet. but there’s still a lot to look forward to. There’s a hardcore mode inspired by the one in the main game but with a special Runescape twist new magic and ranged skill trees and even more cute creatures. Ashenfall has an exciting future ahead.
Runescape Dragonwilds is now available in early access. You can get it on Steam.
