If you are familiar with the British Isles you might not think of Birmingham as a great place for a video game setting. But what if you set it in the 14th century and added zombies? That’s what God Save Birmingham is trying to do. After watching eight minutes of new gameplay. it’s now one of my most anticipated zombie games.

Now I usually prefer zombie games that are co-op and full of huge hordes and crazy weapons like Call of Duty Zombies or Dead Island 2. Because of that games like Killing Floor 3 and John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando were high on my list of upcoming PC games. But now I think God Save Birmingham has moved to the top.

This isn’t a game where you fight hordes with crazy weapons like an electrified bat or a jet turbine. I have seen some gameplay before, but after watching the new extended trailer from IGN. it feels a lot like The Last of Us with its third-person sneaking and realistic takedown moves. The story might not be as strong as in The Last of Us but when it comes to killing zombies it definitely has that same vibe.

The game focuses a lot on using your surroundings. You can move furniture to block doors use ladders as bridges or stand on chairs to reach high ledges. Everything including you and the zombies has realistic physics, making it feel like a fun sandbox.

The new trailer shows how detailed the survival mechanics are. You will see meters for hunger thirst fatigue and panic. To fix these you’ll need to use items from your inventory and go through menus in real-time no pausing to eat. Falling from a height hurts your leg slowing you down. You can break objects for materials and there is a real cooking system.

I think it looks great and the medieval setting is a unique twist for a zombie survival game. God Save Birmingham doesn’t have a release date yet but it will likely have an early access launch.
