For many Baldur's Gate 3 was their first experience with CRPGs. Games like this and Disco Elysium offer so much quality style and accessibility that the genre feels like something anyone can jump in and fall in love with. While a sequel to Disco Elysium is not happening most people have turned their attention to Baldur's Gate 4 which is expected to be made.
We've known for a while that Larian isn't making a D&D sequel. While there might be a Baldur's Gate 4 in the future do not expect it anytime soon. Right now it is better to focus on Larian's next game Divinity: Original Sin 3.
Divinity: Original Sin: The Original (Divinity) Classic
There have been five main Divinity games. Since 2002, the best games in the series have been 2014's Divinity: Original Sin and 2017's Divinity: Original Sin 2. Baldur's Gate 3 shows how much more Larian could achieve if they return to the series.
Divinity: Original Sin doesn't use D&D 5e rules, so there are some differences in combat and actions but the games are still very similar. I highly recommend that anyone who enjoyed Baldur's Gate 3 should try Divinity: Original Sin 2 even if it comes after Baldur's Gate 3. it remains one of Larian's best works.
In that regard I am on the side of being excited about a potential Baldur's Gate 4 one day especially if the cast returns to play their characters once again While Larian is focusing on other projects there is still a lot to look forward to with the possibility of Original Sin 3.
Whatever Comes Next Larian Proves They Know What They're Doing
I believe the next game Larian is working on is Divinity: Original Sin 3 which is a bold concept and so I am very happy to be proven wrong. The studio next game could be another title in the Divinity universe, a brand new game to grow the CRPG genre or something completely different. Honestly I do not mind how it ends because I trust Larian to make it great.
In a world where companies quickly make spin-offs, remasters, and sequels to chase profits. it is a refreshing that Larian chose to walk away from Baldur's Gate, even canceling planned DLC. They made this decision not for money, but out of passion. It is rare for a studio to make this choice and stick with it. We should support Larian not just because Baldur's Gate 3 was great. but because their decision shows what makes the gaming industry special.
We all really like Baldur's Gate 3 and the idea of Baldur's Gate 4 is exciting too. I hope more people get excited for the next game in Larian's second fantasy series.
