As Bungie gets ready to relaunch Marathon, fans of Myth are giving the two classic PC RTS games a makeover with a remaster package.
Bungie is getting ready to bring back Marathon in a new version for 2025. but another old game from the studio is nearly forgotten. Myth: The Fallen Lords and its sequel, Myth 2: Soulblighter were Bungie's first strategy games. They were highly regarded as some of the best RTS games, along with Command and Conquer, Age of Empires, and Starcraft. However as Bungie moved on to Halo and Destiny the Myth games were left behind. Still a small group of loyal fans has been working to bring them back into the spotlight.
Project Magma began as a group making maps for Myth: The Fallen Lords and Myth 2: Soulblighter. Over time, it turned into a community of fans who worked to update the RTS games for new hardware and create ways to play online with others.
You may have missed the first game and its sequel. Unlike other strategy games that focus on gathering resources and building bases the Myth series is about managing squads and units. It tells the story of the battle between Light and Dark. The game features realistic physics weather effects and friendly fire so you’ll need to think carefully about your surroundings and positioning during battles.
The latest release from Project Magma, Myth: Twice Born Edition is the best version so far. It offers a more accurate version of the original Fallen Lords staying true to how it was when it was first released unlike previous versions that added features from the sequel.
The latest update includes the newest version of Myth 2 and its Chimera expansion with features like saving, pausing and fast-forwarding during co-op plus better shadows and reflections. If you haven't checked out Project Magma's work yet. there's plenty more including improved textures better pathfinding balance changes and many fan-made plugins you can add.
There’s one important thing to know. You’ll need a copy of Myth 2 to play. You can try finding a physical disc or use the demo of the first game on the Project Magma website but there’s no way to get a digital copy at the moment. Since the Marathon games recently became available on Steam thanks to the Aleph One fan team we might see something similar for Myth 2 in the future. Developer Jon God says If I have any control I'll make it happen.
Myth: Twice Born Edition will be released on Sunday April 20. You can find all the details and download links in the video description. Keep in mind you’ll need a copy of Myth 2 to play. If you want to help preserve the game visit the original Myth 2 page on GOG and add your name.
