I don’t know about you but naming a first game something like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 makes me think there will be more Clair Obscur games in the future if this one does well. And honestly I’m excited for that.
It’s a great game that feels like a JRPG but without the Japanese part. It’s not just a regular RPG it’s more like a Western version of a JRPG. Maybe we could call it a WRPG? Basically it’s like Final Fantasy if it were made by the French.
This Could Be a Major Leap Forward for the JRPG Genre
We've seen Western games inspired by JRPGs like Bug Fables and Sea of Stars but nothing quite like this. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 stands out with stunning visuals and impressive cutscenes and its gameplay feels like a polished version of Persona 5 especially in the UI and combat animations.
With big names like Charlie Cox from Daredevil and Jennifer English from Baldur’s Gate 3 this is the most ambitious Western attempt at a JRPG so far and it might be strong enough to compete with the long-running Final Fantasy series.
That's a bold statement and it really depends on how people like Clair Obscur but after playing it. I feel sure this game is going to be a hit.
There's Definitely Room for Both Clair Obscur and Final Fantasy
I'm not saying Final Fantasy is bad or that Clair Obscur is better so don't worry. I love Final Fantasy especially Final Fantasy 7. which will always be special to me. I'm just really impressed by Expedition 33 and I hope it becomes successful and stands alongside the great games that inspired it.
Having rivalry doesn't always mean competing. It’s about learning growing and improving. If Clair Obscur can become its own successful series it shows that the genre will only get better soon. Persona stands out for its style and as Final Fantasy moves toward more action-based combat Clair Obscur has the perfect chance to fill an open space and be explored further.
With Final Fantasy more popular than ever thanks to the FF7 Remakes Persona 5 getting fans excited for the next game and even older games like Dragon Quest still going strong. there's plenty of space for a new series like Clair Obscur. I’m So excited to see it push the genre even further.
